Self-Hosted DSC Signing: How Legal Cloud Bharat Eliminates Third-Party Dependencies and Gives You Full Control

Every organization that deals with contracts, agreements, and legal documents needs a reliable way to digitally sign them. While third-party signing gateways have served the industry well, they come with recurring costs, external dependencies, and limited control over the signing experience. Legal Cloud Bharat's self-hosted DSC Signing Service changes the game entirely.

With our self-hosted approach, your organization manages its own Digital Signature Certificates (DSC), signs documents internally using industry-standard cryptographic libraries, and delivers a fully branded signing experience to your clients — all without a single redirect to an external portal.

1. What is a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?

A Digital Signature Certificate is a cryptographic identity issued by a Certifying Authority (CA) that binds a person or organization's identity to a pair of electronic keys — a private key (used to sign) and a public key (used to verify). Under the Information Technology Act, 2000, digital signatures using DSC are legally equivalent to handwritten signatures in India.

  • Class 2 DSC:Used for filing documents with the Registrar of Companies (MCA), Income Tax returns, and GST filings. Validates the identity of the signer against a trusted database.
  • Class 3 DSC:Required for e-tendering, e-procurement, and high-value transactions. Provides the highest level of assurance with in-person identity verification before issuance.
  • Document Signer Certificate (Org DSC):Issued to organizations for bulk automated signing of invoices, agreements, and compliance documents. Available in PFX (software) or HSM (hardware) formats.

2. Why Self-Hosted DSC Signing?

Traditional DSC signing relies on third-party gateways — the user is redirected to an external portal, signs there, and the signed document is returned. This creates dependencies on external uptime, adds per-transaction costs, and offers limited control over the user experience.

  • Zero Third-Party Dependency:Your PFX certificate is uploaded to your own secure server. Signing happens entirely within your infrastructure — no third-party gateways, no external redirects, no per-signature fees.
  • Full Brand Control:The signing page shows your company logo, colors, and branding. Signers see your brand, not a third-party portal. Build trust with a professional, consistent experience.
  • Lower Cost at Scale:No per-transaction fees. Whether you sign 100 or 100,000 documents per month, the cost stays the same — just your infrastructure and certificate renewal.
  • Data Sovereignty:Your documents and private keys never leave your infrastructure. The PFX is encrypted with AES-256 at rest. No data is shared with external parties.
  • Multi-Signer Workflows:Support for sequential and parallel signing. Each signer gets their own secure, token-based signing link. The system tracks who signed, when, and from where.

3. How It Works

The self-hosted DSC signing flow is designed to be simple and familiar, but everything happens on your own servers:

  • Admin Uploads PFX Certificate:Your admin uploads the organization's PFX certificate to the signing service. The PFX is validated, the private key extracted, and the certificate is encrypted with AES-256 before secure storage.
  • Document Creator Initiates Request:When a document is ready for signing, the creator selects 'DSC Signing' as the request type, adds signers, places signature positions on the PDF using a visual drag-and-drop interface, and submits.
  • Signers Receive Secure Links:Each signer receives a unique, encrypted, time-limited signing URL. No login is required for external signers — the token in the URL is the authentication.
  • Signer Reviews and Signs:The signer opens the link, sees the PDF with signature positions highlighted, and can draw, type, or upload their signature. The signing dialog is company-branded.
  • Cryptographic DSC Applied:The server loads the PFX, applies the visible signature at the specified coordinates, and embeds a PKCS#7/CMS cryptographic signature using the organization's DSC certificate. The signed PDF is verifiable in Adobe Acrobat.
  • Callback and Next Signer:The signed PDF is sent back to the calling application. In sequential mode, the next signer is automatically notified. The process repeats until all signers have signed.

4. PFX vs HSM: Choosing the Right Format

The signing service supports PFX-based certificates out of the box, with an architecture designed to support HSM integration in the future.

  • PFX (Software-Based):Certificate stored as an encrypted file in the database. Easy to integrate, deploy, and manage. Ideal for SMBs, legal firms, and SaaS platforms signing moderate volumes. Supports automated workflows via API.
  • HSM (Hardware Security Module):Certificate stored in a tamper-proof hardware device. Maximum protection against key extraction. Required by banks, NBFCs, government agencies, and insurance companies for regulatory compliance. Supports millions of signatures per month.

5. Industry Use Cases

  • Legal Firms:Sign client agreements, NDAs, power of attorney, and court filings with legally binding DSC signatures. Multi-signer support ensures all parties sign in the correct order.
  • Banking & NBFCs:Digitally sign loan agreements, KYC documents, account opening forms, and compliance reports. Each branch can have its own DSC certificate for signing.
  • Corporate & Enterprise:Sign employment contracts, vendor agreements, board resolutions, and procurement documents. Parent companies can manage child company certificates centrally.
  • Government & Regulatory:Sign tenders, procurement orders, policy documents, and inter-departmental communications with Class 3 DSC certificates.
  • Insurance & Healthcare:Sign policy documents, claim forms, patient consent forms, and medical records. Automated bulk signing for high-volume document processing.
  • Real Estate:Sign property agreements, lease deeds, sale deeds, and registration documents. Multi-party sequential signing with visual signature placement on the document.

6. Security and Compliance

  • IT Act 2000 Compliant:Digital signatures using DSC are legally recognized under Section 3 of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872.
  • AES-256 Encryption at Rest:PFX certificates are encrypted with AES-256-CBC before storage. The encryption key is managed separately from the database. Private keys are never exposed to the frontend.
  • Token-Based Signer Authentication:Each signer receives a unique, encrypted, time-limited token. Tokens are single-use, expire after a configurable period, and are bound to a specific signer and document.
  • Complete Audit Trail:Every signing attempt is logged with timestamp, IP address, certificate thumbprint, signature hash (SHA-256), and signing method. Full audit trail for regulatory compliance.
  • IP Whitelist for Admin:The admin portal for managing certificates is restricted to whitelisted IP addresses. Only authorized internal team members can upload, manage, or revoke certificates.

7. Self-Hosted vs Third-Party Gateway: A Comparison

  • Cost:Self-hosted: One-time setup + certificate renewal. Third-party: Per-transaction fees that scale with volume.
  • Branding:Self-hosted: Fully branded signing page with your logo and colors. Third-party: Signer sees the gateway provider's branding.
  • Data Control:Self-hosted: Documents and keys stay on your infrastructure. Third-party: Documents pass through external servers.
  • Uptime Dependency:Self-hosted: Depends on your infrastructure only. Third-party: Depends on gateway provider's uptime and API availability.
  • Integration:Self-hosted: RESTful API, fits into existing pipeline as a new workflow. Third-party: Gateway-specific SDK and redirect flow.

8. Getting Started

Setting up Legal Cloud Bharat's self-hosted DSC signing takes minutes, not months:

  • Deploy the Signing Service:The signing service deploys as a standalone API on your infrastructure or cloud. Quick setup with minimal configuration.
  • Add Your Company:Register your company in the admin portal. Configure branding (logo, colors, signing page title).
  • Upload Your PFX Certificate:Upload your organization's PFX certificate. The system validates it, extracts certificate details, and encrypts it for secure storage.
  • Start Signing:Create signing requests from your document management system. Signers receive branded, secure signing links. Documents are signed with your DSC certificate.
